Fred K's Cancer

In 2009, we chose to use the Traveling Baseball Babes blog and our sparkling personalities as tools to fundraise. The idea for Fred K’s Cancer began when we couldn’t find a proper event dedicated to raising money and awareness for Oral Cancer and Testicular Cancer. While the cancers may seem unrelated, there is a reason why we chose these particular diseases to support (and it wasn’t because we thought combining balls and the mouth together was funny). Both of our fathers are named Fred (hence, Fred K’s Cancer) and are cancer survivors. Lisa’s father had been diagnosed with oral cancer in 2003 and Serena’s father had been diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2008. The Fred’s are both avid Mets fans, so we thought that coupling the charity with a baseball theme would be more personal.

Since we couldn’t find a satisfactory avenue through which we could support our fathers, we chose to organize an event ourselves. All donations raised through Fred K’s Cancer are split between the Oral Cancer Foundation and Sean Kimerling Testicular Cancer Foundation. We hope to educate people about oral cancer, a disease in which they may not be familiar with, and the importance of self-examinations in order to catch testicular cancer at its earliest stages.

The 1st Annual Fred K's Cancer Event in June of 2010 at Cantiague Park was an enormous success, beating our fundraising goal of $2,000 by $400! In November 2010, Fred K's Cancer, Inc. became incorporated in New York State and in July 2011, an IRS registered public charity.
